Star Students

The end of the year is fast approaching and we had our class music program and awards ceremony yesterday. All the kids got to walk the red carpet to receive their special awards. They are all such special kiddos to me and I will miss them dearly! 

Fancy Nancy Presentation

Robin Preiss Glasser, the Illustrator of the Fancy Nancy books came to our school for a visit! She spoke about her inspiration for her drawings and read us the newest Fancy Nancy book! We were all very inspired by her presentation. She even took time to sign a class Fancy Nancy book! It was a Fancy, Fabulous and Fun day!

Earth Day Fun!

The week of Earth Day we learned it is important to recycle to help save the planet. We saved up paper, plastic, glass, and aluminum. Then we visited the Recycling Center and sorted all the materials. It felt good to help the planet together! 

We also planted grass seeds in soil to make grass heads! They grew and grew and grew! They are very cute and all have their own cute facial expressions. 

Aquarium Field Trip

First grade got to visit the Aquarium today! We learned a lot and made plenty of fun memories!

Caterpillars, Harvester Ants and Butterflies, Oh my!

Room 103 is turning into a critter zoo! Adding to our tadpoles we have caterpillars and harvester ants. We got tiny caterpillars last week and they have already plumped up and some have even gone into their chrysalis! When the metamorphosis is complete, these caterpillars will be beautiful "Painted Lady" Butterflies. We should see them emerge next week. As butterflies they drink sugar water.

The harvester ants came a week after our caterpillars and have not wasted any time making their house a home! The ants sting, so they have to be refrigerated for 10 minutes before being transferred into their  "AntWorks" container. You can see all their hard work in the tunnel designs they have created!

Spanish Program

We are lucky to have the high school spanish classes come to do a Spanish Program with us every Friday! We get to learn words and songs in spanish, such as months of the year, days of the week, seasons, numbers to twenty, the alphabet, and traditional spanish songs. The students are also exposed to instruments from various spanish speaking countries as well as toys and games. They even won authentic mexican bracelets that are fun to wear! The kids are learning a lot and having a great time! 

Tadpoles!

In our first grade froggie classroom we of course had to get some tadpoles for our class pet! These are not any ordinary tadpoles though, they are going to grow into Poison Dart Frogs! A friend of mine breeds these frogs and this generation no longer secretes the poisonous hormones through its skin. When they transform into frogs, they should be a beautiful bright blue color. Right now one has back legs and is growing front legs. The other still has its long tail. Having these tadpoles are an added "hands on" element that allows students to actually observe the life cycle of a frog while we learn about it in class!
